ICEYE is a Finnish space technology company, founded in Espoo in 2014, that designs, builds, and operates the world's largest constellation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites. SAR imaging works in any weather, day or night, penetrating cloud, rain, and smoke, which lets ICEYE deliver persistent monitoring of any location on Earth. The company sells SAR imagery and satellite tasking through an API and data platform, offers a Tactical Access service that compresses tasking to delivery to under one hour, and builds full mission systems, including its Gen 4, ISR Cell, Connect, and Federate platforms, for customers that want dedicated satellites or sovereign space capability rather than shared imagery access. ICEYE's business splits along two lines. On the government and defense side, it builds and delivers complete sovereign space intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems, including satellites, ground infrastructure, and mission operations, so a national customer owns and tasks its own SAR capability rather than buying access to a shared constellation; it delivered such a system to Poland's Armed Forces within twelve months, among the fastest sovereign space deployments on record, and by mid-2026 seven European governments had procured ICEYE sovereign systems. On the commercial side, its natural catastrophe products, covering flood, hurricane, and wildfire monitoring, near real time damage assessment, and deforestation tracking, serve insurance, reinsurance, banking, and utility customers as an alternative data source for catastrophe and credit loss risk, distinguished from optical earth observation vendors because SAR sees through the cloud cover present during the storm and flood conditions when optical imagery is unavailable. ICEYE began as a 2012 research project at Aalto University's radio technology department in Espoo and was incorporated in 2014 by Rafal Modrzewski, who remains chief executive, and Pekka Laurila, its chief strategy officer. Its first satellite, ICEYE-X1, launched in January 2018 as the first Finnish commercial satellite and the first satellite under 100 kilograms to carry synthetic aperture radar; the constellation had grown to more than 70 satellites in orbit by mid-2026. The company reported more than 250 million euros in 2025 revenue with more than 100 million euros in EBITDA and a contracted backlog exceeding 1.5 billion euros, and it now employs more than 1,000 people across offices in Finland, Poland, Spain, Germany, the UK, the US, Australia, Japan, the UAE, and Greece. In June 2026, ICEYE closed a Series F round led by General Atlantic, with participation from the Qatar Investment Authority, TCV, Nokia, and Finnish state investors Solidium, Tesi, Varma, and Ilmarinen, raising over 1 billion euros in combined primary and secondary proceeds at a valuation above 10 billion euros. The company said the capital would fund doubling its satellite production rate from about 50 to a targeted 100 satellites per year by 2028.
