The LSE Directory / Alternative data

INRIX is a transportation-analytics company that collects anonymised, aggregated location data from connected vehicles, mobile devices and roadway sensors and turns it into traffic, parking, road-safety and mobility products. Its core platform draws on tens of petabytes of movement data covering close to 1,000 cities in 36 countries, feeding lines such as Traffic Intelligence (real-time and predictive congestion and speed data), Parking Solutions (availability and curb analytics across tens of thousands of cities), Signal Analytics (intersection wait-time and traffic-signal performance measurement) and Roadway and Safety products used by transport agencies and automakers. Within that business INRIX runs a dedicated financial-services line that repackages its raw movement data as tickerised alternative data for investment managers, distinguishing it from most traffic-data vendors, which sell only to public agencies and automakers. INRIX Trips Plus, built on connected passenger and commercial vehicle trips matched to a points-of-interest database originally built with SafeGraph, covers roughly 450 U.S. stock tickers and lets hedge funds and asset managers subscribe to just the tickers, sectors or locations relevant to a portfolio to estimate consumer footfall, supply-chain activity and revenue ahead of earnings. A companion product, Cross Border Insights, tracks vehicle flows across more than 100 U.S.-Mexico and 40 U.S.-Canada crossings for trade and logistics signals. INRIX was founded in 2004 by Bryan Mistele, who remains chief executive, and Craig Chapman, building on traffic-prediction algorithms licensed out of Microsoft Research; Mistele had previously run Microsoft's automotive software group. The company has raised more than 100 million dollars in venture funding across multiple rounds since 2005 from investors including Kleiner Perkins, Venrock, Bain Capital Ventures and Porsche SE, and has grown through acquisition, buying European traffic provider ITIS in 2011, parking platform ParkMe in 2015, connected-car software firm OpenCar in 2016 and micromobility data firm Ride Report in 2023. It employs roughly 280 people as of 2026 and counts automakers, cities and companies such as BMW, IBM and Transport for London among its non-financial clients. In July 2026 INRIX introduced AI Infrastructure Intelligence, a new alternative-data product presented at Neudata's New York Summer Data Summit, which uses its vehicle and location feeds to track data-center construction, power-infrastructure build-out and AI supply-chain activity for investors trying to spot infrastructure trends before they become widely reported.
