The LSE Directory / Alternative data

MarketPsych is a financial natural language processing and artificial intelligence company that converts unstructured text, real time news, social media posts, earnings call transcripts and company filings, into structured sentiment, emotion and thematic scores for financial markets. Its data is distributed under the LSEG MarketPsych Analytics brand, successor to Thomson Reuters MarketPsych Indices and, after LSEG's January 2021 acquisition of Refinitiv, Refinitiv MarketPsych Analytics. The feed covers more than 100,000 companies, 62 stock indices and sovereign bonds, 44 currencies, 53 commodities and over 500 cryptocurrencies across 252 countries, with sentiment history running back to 1998. It draws on more than 4,000 global news and social media outlets in 12 languages, publishes over 100 machine readable scores per instrument, and refreshes on 60 second, hourly and daily cycles. The firm specialises in reading what the market is saying about a company or asset rather than what the company discloses about itself. Its companion product, LSEG MarketPsych ESG Analytics, scores environmental, social and governance performance from news and social media coverage across more than 4,000 tracked ESG themes, an external, market based read that the company positions against traditional ESG ratings built on corporate self reporting; it is used to flag greenwashing and to score the roughly 50,000 private companies that self reported ESG data does not reach. Customers are institutional, hedge funds, banks, asset managers, pension funds, research firms and government agencies, who use the scores for alpha generation, volatility forecasting, macroeconomic nowcasting, risk management and ESG monitoring rather than for retail investing. MarketPsych was founded in the early 2000s by psychiatrist and quantitative trader Richard L. Peterson, author of "Inside the Investor's Brain," together with Frank Murtha, initially as a behavioral finance consultancy. The firm began building automated media sentiment analysis around 2004, spun off the hedge fund MarketPsy Capital LLC in 2008, and commercialised its sentiment feed as MarketPsych Data LLC around 2010 to 2011, distributed from the outset through Thomson Reuters. Peterson remains CEO. Its research has been cited in more than 100 peer reviewed papers, including in the Journal of Finance and the Journal of Banking and Finance; company records (LinkedIn, Tracxn) list it as a small team of roughly 11 to 50 people, headquartered in Singapore, and unfunded by external investors. In May 2026 MarketPsych launched Radar MCP, a Model Context Protocol server that lets AI assistants such as Claude query its sentiment and thematic data directly to build company baskets from media commentary, demonstrated in its own published examples on humanoid robotics suppliers and ESG controversy timelines, and made its LSEG datasets available through the Databricks Marketplace the same month.
