The LSE Directory / Alternative data
Precisely is a US enterprise software and data company built around data integrity: making sure the data an organisation runs on is accurate, consistent and usable in context. Its flagship product, the Precisely Data Integrity Suite, is a set of cloud services covering data integration, governance, observability, quality, master data management and data enrichment, sold alongside legacy mainframe tools (the Syncsort sort engine, IBM systems optimisation) and customer communications software (EngageOne). Within the enrichment layer it sells geocoding and address-validation services under the PreciselyID identifier, the Precisely Places database of more than 180 million businesses and points of interest, and a data catalogue spanning several hundred datasets and thousands of attributes covering addresses, property, demographics, boundaries, and natural hazard and risk data. Precisely specialises in location intelligence and reference-data enrichment rather than financial market or trading data; its customers are enterprise IT, data and analytics teams in financial services, insurance, retail, healthcare, government, telecommunications, utilities and manufacturing, who license its data via APIs, SDKs, flat files and cloud marketplaces such as Snowflake, Databricks and AWS. Its differentiation against other alternative-data vendors is breadth and delivery model: rather than a single novel dataset, it packages a large catalogue of reference and geospatial data plus the integration and governance tooling to bring it into a customer's own data stack, and its legacy mainframe and ETL business gives it entrenched footholds inside large, regulated enterprises that a newer data-only vendor would not have. The company traces to Whitlow Computer Systems, founded in 1968 in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, which rebranded as Syncsort in 1981 around its dominant IBM mainframe sort utility before taking the Precisely name in 2020. It is headquartered in Burlington, Massachusetts, and is led by CEO Walid Abu-Hadba. Its 2019 acquisition of Pitney Bowes' software and data business, a roughly 700 million dollar deal backed by Centerbridge Partners and Clearlake Capital, roughly doubled the company's size to about 2,000 employees and brought in the location-services and data-enrichment capabilities that now anchor its alternative-data offering. In March 2021, Clearlake Capital and TA Associates acquired majority control of Precisely in a deal valuing the company at 3.5 billion dollars, with Centerbridge retaining a minority stake; at that point Precisely reported roughly 600 million dollars in revenue and served more than 12,000 customers across over 100 countries, including a large share of the Fortune 100 and Fortune 500. It has continued acquiring, adding Infogix, Winshuttle, Anchor Point and CEDAR CX in 2021, PlaceIQ (mobile location and audience data) in January 2022, and Transerve (location intelligence) in January 2023. Precisely's recent public positioning centres on preparing enterprise data for AI and autonomous agents, framing its suite as closing what it calls the "agentic AI data integrity gap." It has added an AI agent, a data product marketplace and Model Context Protocol (MCP) support to its API layer, and lists integrations across AWS, Databricks, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Snowflake, SAP, ServiceNow and Splunk as part of that push.
