The LSE Directory / CFD and forex brokers
eToro is a multi-asset online brokerage and social trading platform, founded in Tel Aviv in 2007 (initially as RetailFX) by brothers Yoni Assia and Ronen Assia together with David Ring. The platform lets retail users buy and hold real stocks, ETFs and cryptoassets, and separately trade CFDs (contracts for difference) on forex, commodities, indices and shares, through web, desktop and mobile apps; a redesigned "AI-first" app built around an in-app assistant called Tori was unveiled at a London event in July 2026. The group's US subsidiary, eToro USA LLC, is based in Hoboken, New Jersey, while the wider business holds licenses across multiple jurisdictions, including the UK's FCA, Cyprus's CySEC and Australia's ASIC, and operates in more than 75 countries. The company's defining feature is CopyTrader, which lets any user automatically mirror the real time trades of another investor on the platform in proportion to their own account size, paired with Smart Portfolios that bundle multiple assets or strategies into a single investable unit. This sets eToro apart from both conventional CFD brokers and standalone crypto exchanges: it serves self-directed retail investors who want one account spanning stocks, crypto and leveraged CFD exposure, wrapped in a large in-app social feed of trader activity, rankings and commentary, rather than institutional order-book access or professional execution tools. eToro went public on the Nasdaq in May 2025 under the ticker ETOR, pricing its IPO at $52 a share to raise about $620 million, with shares closing up nearly 29% on debut. Prior to listing, the company had raised a $250 million private round in 2023. By the end of Q1 2026 (quarter ended March 31, 2026) eToro reported 4.02 million funded accounts and $17.0 billion in assets under administration, rising to 4.07 million funded accounts and $18.7 billion in assets under administration by the end of April 2026, alongside GAAP net income of $82 million for the quarter. In September 2024 eToro USA settled with the US SEC for $1.5 million over operating as an unregistered broker and clearing agency for crypto assets, and agreed to limit US customers to trading Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Ether. In 2026 eToro has been pushing further into crypto infrastructure and payments: it closed its acquisition of self-custodial crypto wallet Zengo on April 30, 2026, led a $12.5 million funding round in onchain derivatives platform Extended in July 2026 with plans to integrate perpetual futures into Zengo, expanded its cryptoasset lineup to more than 200 tokens, and has been reported by the Financial Times to be weighing expansion into payments and a possible banking license.
