S&P Capital IQ Pro is the flagship research and analytics platform of S&P Global Market Intelligence, a division of S&P Global Inc. It runs as a desktop application, a web platform, and an Excel plugin, and combines company financials, market and sector data, credit ratings, ownership data, news, and transcripts into a single workflow. Coverage spans more than 109,000 public companies (around 49,000 with current financials) and more than 60 million private companies (16 million plus with recent financials), with data drawn from constituent S&P Global brands including Compustat fundamentals, Visible Alpha consensus estimates, and Markit fixed income and pricing data. The platform is built for institutional research and deal workflows rather than retail investing: investment banks, asset managers, private equity firms, corporates, advisory firms, and academic institutions use it for company screening, comparable-company analysis, credit and fixed income research, and M&A and capital markets work. Its differentiators inside the category are depth of private-company data (a segment most public-market data terminals do not cover well), tight Microsoft Office integration for building models and pitch decks directly from platform data, and a growing set of generative AI tools, ChatIQ, Document Intelligence, and Chart Explainer among them, aimed at automating research tasks such as document search and chart summarisation. The product traces back to Capital IQ, founded in 1998 by Steve Turner, Randal Winn, and Neal Goldman and commercially launched in 2000. McGraw-Hill Financial acquired Capital IQ in 2004 for more than 200 million dollars; when McGraw-Hill Financial rebranded as S&P Global in 2016, the product became S&P Capital IQ, later S&P Capital IQ Pro. Its parent, S&P Global, reported roughly 42,350 employees and 14.2 billion dollars in revenue for 2024 across the whole company, of which Market Intelligence is one of several divisions alongside Ratings, Commodity Insights, Mobility, and Indices. In March 2026, S&P Global announced an expansion of Capital IQ Pro's data and AI capabilities: more than 4 million additional structured securities from Markit with pricing, analytics, and liquidity data, expanded Visible Alpha Biopharma coverage (drug pipeline, clinical trial, and regulatory timeline data), roughly 20,000 new private-markets documents such as investment committee packs and LP filings added to the Document Intelligence search tool, and integration of ProntoNLP sentiment analysis for earnings call transcripts. The announcement also referenced a planned integration of Drift AI, an acquisition intended to bring natural language financial modeling into the platform's Excel plugin, per Warren Breakstone, S&P Market Intelligence's Head of Data and Research.
