Cboe Clear Europe N.V. is a central counterparty (CCP) that clears and settles cash equity, exchange-traded fund and depositary receipt trades executed on European trading venues. It interposes itself between the buyer and seller of every cleared trade, becoming the legal counterparty to both sides and guaranteeing settlement if one side defaults. It is supervised by De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) and the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) under the EU's European Market Infrastructure Regulation (EMIR), and holds cross-border recognition as a non-UK CCP in the United Kingdom and as a foreign CCP in Switzerland, permitting it to serve SIX Swiss Exchange participants. It is headquartered in Amsterdam at Symphony Offices, Gustav Mahlerplein 77, with a branch office in London. Cboe Clear Europe differentiates itself as a venue-agnostic, "interoperable" CCP rather than one tied to a single exchange group. It describes itself as the most connected CCP in Europe, providing clearing to 52 trading venues and segments as of mid-2026, up from 47 in late 2024, which lets a single clearing membership cover trades executed on multiple competing exchanges and multilateral trading facilities rather than requiring a separate CCP relationship per market. Its members are broker-dealers, market makers and brokers that need pan-European reach through one connection; direct clearing members have included the UK retail broker Freetrade, which took up direct membership from January 2022 to give its retail customers commission-free access to German and Finnish listed stocks cleared through the CCP, with plans at the time to extend to further Euronext markets. In November 2024, Cboe Clear Europe secured Dutch regulatory approval to launch centrally cleared European securities financing transactions (SFT) in cash equities and ETFs, settling across 19 European central securities depositories, with the Bank of New York Mellon and J.P. Morgan acting as tri-party collateral agents and Pirum handling trade-instruction and post-trade lifecycle messaging; this converted what had been a bilateral securities-lending market into a centrally cleared one. The clearing house's corporate lineage runs to December 2013, when European Multilateral Clearing Facility N.V. (EMCF, Amsterdam) and European Central Counterparty Limited (ECCP Limited, London), both established in 2007, merged to form European Central Counterparty N.V. It received full EMIR authorization on 1 April 2014, the first equity CCP to do so, and traded as EuroCCP. Ownership was originally split among Cboe Global Markets, Nasdaq and Euronext (20 percent each) with ABN Amro and the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation holding the remaining 40 percent; Cboe Worldwide Holdings Limited, a Cboe Global Markets affiliate, bought out the other shareholders and took full ownership on 1 July 2020, and the business was rebranded from EuroCCP to Cboe Clear Europe in November 2022. Vikesh Patel serves as President. The firm reported a record 37.2 percent cash equity clearing market share in the third quarter of 2024 across the 47 venues it served at that time, and separately clears listed European equity index futures and options through the Cboe Europe Derivatives (CEDX) product set it launched in 2021. Beyond the 2024 SFT launch, Cboe Clear Europe has continued to widen its venue count and publishes commentary through Cboe's own channels arguing for continued clearing competition among multiple CCPs in Europe rather than consolidation around a single, mandated clearer, a stance consistent with its positioning as an interoperable, multi-venue alternative to exchange-captive clearing houses.
