Anchorage Digital is a San Francisco founded digital asset platform that provides custody, trading and financing, staking, governance participation, settlement and stablecoin issuance services to institutional clients. Its flagship entity, Anchorage Digital Bank N.A., holds keys and assets for banks, asset managers, hedge funds, venture firms and government agencies, using a security model built around hardware security modules, biometric (voice and video) authentication, behavioral outlier detection and elastic quorum based transaction signing rather than the cold storage vault model common among older custodians. The company differentiates itself from other crypto custodians primarily on regulatory status and operational speed. In January 2021, Anchorage Digital Bank became the first entity to receive a national trust bank charter from the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, giving it qualified custodian status under direct federal, rather than state money transmitter, oversight; it also holds a New York BitLicense and a Major Payment Institution license from Singapore's Monetary Authority. On the product side, the company markets that roughly 90 percent of custody transactions settle in under 20 minutes, letting institutional clients move funds without waiting on manual custodian approval windows, a contrast with competitors that route transactions through slower multi-day authorization processes. Anchorage Digital was founded in 2017 by Nathan McCauley (CEO) and Diogo Mónica (Executive Chairman), both security engineers, with early backing from Andreessen Horowitz and Blockchain Capital. It raised a $350 million Series D in 2021 at a valuation exceeding $3 billion, with investors including KKR, Goldman Sachs, GIC and Wellington Management, and Visa has also been named among its backers. In February 2026, stablecoin issuer Tether made a $100 million strategic equity investment in the company at a $4.2 billion valuation, alongside Anchorage Digital's first employee tender offer; the investment builds on Anchorage Digital Bank's role as a US stablecoin issuer for Tether. The company has also served as a custodian for digital assets seized by the US Department of Justice and maintains offices in New York, Porto and Singapore in addition to its Sioux Falls, South Dakota banking operations. As of early 2026, Anchorage Digital had reportedly been exploring a further capital raise in the $200 to $400 million range as a precursor to a possible public listing, before ultimately closing the smaller $100 million Tether led round instead; a public offering timeline has been discussed in press reporting but not confirmed by the company.
