The LSE Directory / Crypto exchanges
LMAX Digital is the institutional spot cryptocurrency exchange operated by LMAX Group, the London-headquartered financial technology group whose FX venue, LMAX Exchange, is regulated by the UK Financial Conduct Authority. Launched in May 2018 as, in the company's own words, the first institutional-only crypto currency exchange, LMAX Digital runs a central limit order book for spot trading in Bitcoin, Ethereum and roughly two dozen other pairs, including Litecoin, Solana, XRP and Chainlink, alongside custody built on a tiered cold-wallet and vault storage system. Matching uses the same in-house technology stack LMAX Group built for its FX business, with average execution under 76 microseconds and throughput above 100,000 messages per second. The exchange is built exclusively for institutions, banks, hedge funds, asset managers, proprietary trading firms and brokers, with no retail-facing product. Its central limit order book runs on strict price-time priority with no last-look order rejection, so every participant trades anonymously against the same visible book rather than receiving individually quoted, rejectable prices, the model most OTC crypto liquidity providers use instead. Connectivity is institutional-grade only: FIX 4.2/4.4, REST and WebSocket APIs, proprietary Java and .NET APIs, and the ITCH market data protocol, aimed at firms that need auditable execution and service-level agreements rather than a browser-based retail trading screen. LMAX Digital itself is authorised and regulated by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission as a provider of DLT-based execution and custody services, under license number FSC1342B; this is separate from LMAX Exchange, the group's FCA-regulated FX venue. LMAX Group was established in 2010 as a joint venture between Betfair and Goldman Sachs and has been led by CEO David Mercer since a 2012 management buyout; in July 2021 private equity firm J.C. Flowers bought a 30 percent stake in the group for $300 million, valuing it at roughly $1 billion. By its fifth anniversary in mid-2023, LMAX Digital had processed close to $1 trillion of cumulative crypto currency trading volume across more than 190 million trades, with around 750 institutional clients onboarded. In February 2026, LMAX Group unveiled Omnia Exchange, a new cross-asset venue that extends LMAX Digital's crypto-FX execution infrastructure so institutions can trade FX, stablecoins and other digital assets directly against one another, settling on either traditional rails or blockchain. LMAX Digital continues to operate within that structure as the group's dedicated institutional crypto spot execution venue and custodian, having reported $8.2 trillion of institutional crypto trading volume in the year to early 2026.
