The LSE Directory / Data providers
Benzinga is a financial media and data technology company headquartered in Detroit, Michigan. It operates a free news site, Benzinga.com, alongside Benzinga Pro, a paid real-time newsfeed and trading-alerts terminal, and a separate suite of business-to-business market data APIs that other platforms embed directly. The API catalogue includes an in-house financial newswire, analyst ratings, earnings and economic calendars, insider and government trade data, unusual options activity, SEC filings, corporate actions such as splits and dividends, company fundamentals, a security master, and ancillary datasets such as company logos and trending-ticker lists. Its differentiation is speed and retail reach rather than institutional trading infrastructure. Benzinga states on its own site that it delivers news to client platforms in under a tenth of a second and describes itself as the largest news vendor to North American brokerages, citing distribution through platforms including TD Ameritrade, MarketWatch and Bloomberg. Its customer base is weighted toward retail brokerages, fintech apps and individual active traders who subscribe to Benzinga Pro directly, distinguishing it from data vendors built primarily for sell-side or buy-side trading desks. The in-house newswire, staffed by its own journalists, is the core asset it licenses out through the API business rather than reselling third-party wire content. The company was founded in Detroit in 2010 by Jason Raznick, who started it in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis to give retail investors independent financial news outside traditional brokerage channels; he remains the company's founder and continues in a senior leadership role. Benzinga took a 1.5 million dollar investment from venture fund Lightbank in 2011. By the time Toronto and New York based investment firm Beringer Capital acquired a majority stake in October 2021, in a deal reportedly valued at more than 300 million dollars, Benzinga had grown to more than 100 employees and, per company figures cited at the time, around 25 million monthly readers across roughly 125 countries. Its data catalogue extends beyond the core U.S. business, which the company says covers the full Wilshire 5000 with a historical news archive dating back to 2009: the API suite also includes company logo datasets for the UK, Australian and Indian markets, alongside its long-standing U.S. coverage.
