The LSE Directory / Data providers
BMLL Technologies is an independent provider of harmonised historical market data and analytics. Its core work is taking raw exchange order book data, Level 3 (market by order), Level 2 (aggregated depth) and Level 1 (top of book), and cleaning, standardising and unifying it into a single consistent format spanning global equities, ETFs, futures and US equity options. Clients access this through BMLL Data Feed (a production data delivery product), BMLL Data Lab (a cloud native Python research sandbox for querying and backtesting against the harmonised history) and BMLL Vantage (a no code visualisation and analytics tool), alongside a library of pre computed order book analytics. The firm specialises in reconstructing the full limit order book at the order level rather than reselling raw exchange feeds, which lets clients run consistent transaction cost analysis, best execution review, market microstructure research and backtesting across venues that would otherwise each need separate data engineering. It positions itself against incumbent exchange owned and vendor data businesses by focusing purely on harmonised historical, not real time, order book depth, and by 2025 had extended coverage past 120 trading venues across the US, Europe and Asia Pacific, including recent expansion into India, Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. Its customer base is institutional: banks, asset managers, hedge funds, market makers, brokers, exchanges and trading venues, data redistributors and academic institutions. BMLL was founded in 2014 out of the machine learning laboratories at the University of Cambridge; Hugh Christensen is among its founders. Paul Humphrey became CEO in December 2019 alongside chairman Lee Hodgkinson, a leadership change that preceded the firm's international expansion. Reported funding rounds include a 26 million dollar Series B in October 2022 and a further 21 million dollar strategic investment led by market maker Optiver in October 2024. In October 2025, private equity firm Nordic Capital agreed to acquire BMLL in partnership with the existing management team and minority shareholder Optiver, both of whom remain shareholders; official terms were not disclosed, though Bloomberg reported the deal valued at approximately 250 million dollars. Following the Nordic Capital investment, BMLL said it intends to use the capital to extend venue coverage, deepen historical archives and expand multi asset capabilities, positioning itself as an independent alternative to incumbent exchange and vendor owned historical data providers.
