The LSE Directory / Data providers
Coin Metrics is an institutional crypto data and intelligence provider, founded in 2017, that aggregates blockchain (on-chain) network data, exchange-sourced market data, benchmark pricing, and index products, and delivers them through APIs and dashboards. Its product line includes Network Data Pro (aggregated on-chain network metrics), Market Data Feed and Market Data Pro (trades, order books, and candles from exchange venues), CM Prices and Reference Rates (USD, EUR, BTC, and ETH benchmark prices), Atlas (a blockchain search and on-chain analytics tool), and a Security Master product for harmonized crypto reference data. The company targets institutional buy-side and sell-side users rather than retail traders: asset managers, hedge funds, crypto-native funds, ETF issuers, proprietary trading firms, banks, broker-dealers, OTC desks, custodians, and payment service providers. Its differentiator against general-purpose crypto data vendors is benchmark-grade methodology built for regulated use: CM Reference Rates are constructed to align with IOSCO Principles for Financial Benchmarks so they can support fund NAV calculation, index construction, and derivatives settlement rather than just price display. Coin Metrics also co-developed Datonomy, a digital-asset classification taxonomy, with Goldman Sachs and MSCI, announced in November 2022, with MSCI serving as owner and sole administrator of the standard; this places its data inside mainstream institutional index and risk infrastructure rather than a purely crypto-native tool set. Coin Metrics was founded in 2017; the project was initiated by Nic Carter and Aleksei Nokhrin, with Carter later handing executive leadership to co-founder Tim Rice, who became CEO. It is headquartered in Boston. The company closed a $1.9 million seed round in February 2019 led by Castle Island Ventures with Fidelity Investments, Highland Capital Partners, and Dragonfly Capital, followed by a $35 million Series C in April 2022 led by Acrew Capital and BNY Mellon, with participation from Goldman Sachs, Fidelity, Highland Capital Partners, Cboe Global Markets, Mubadala Investment Company, and Brevan Howard Digital, among others. Its Market Data Feed covers 39 exchanges spanning more than 3,000 assets, 21,000-plus spot markets, 10,000-plus futures markets, and 14,000-plus options markets, while its pricing product prices more than 1,500 digital assets. In July 2025, institutional digital-asset trading technology firm Talos agreed to acquire Coin Metrics for more than $100 million, described as Talos's largest acquisition to date, with the aim of combining Coin Metrics' data and analytics with Talos's order and execution management and portfolio management systems into one institutional platform. As of this research, Coin Metrics operates as a data and intelligence product line under Talos; its public website and product pages now redirect to talos.com.
