CoinDesk Data, operating under the regulated entity CC Data Limited and previously known as CryptoCompare and then CCData, is an institutional grade digital asset market data and index provider. It normalises real time and historical trade, order book, derivatives, on-chain, social and news data from more than 300 centralized and decentralized exchanges, covering over 10,000 cryptocurrencies and roughly 300,000 crypto and fiat trading pairs, delivered through a single standardised API. On top of that raw data it publishes reference rates and benchmark indices, including the CoinDesk index family, for use in strategy backtesting, volatility and sentiment measurement, portfolio valuation and tax calculation. The firm differentiates itself from primarily retail facing aggregators such as CoinMarketCap or CoinGecko by leaning on institutional grade data quality and formal regulatory standing: CC Data Limited is authorised by the UK Financial Conduct Authority as a benchmark administrator, a status that lets it produce BMR compliant multi asset indices and reference rates for licensees, something few crypto data vendors can offer. Its customers span large financial institutions, exchanges, government agencies and academic users needing audit ready, standardised market data, alongside a large retail user base carried over from its CryptoCompare brand and site. The business traces to CryptoCompare, founded in 2014 in London by Charles Hayter, which was later reorganised as the benchmark administrator CCData. In January 2024, VanEck's index subsidiary MarketVector Indexes, a CCData index partner since 2017 whose licensed products then tracked over 33 billion dollars in assets, led a strategic investment in the company. Disclosed institutional clients and distribution partners include J.P. Morgan, Chainlink, MSCI, SIX, SGX, Coinbase, Ripple, Refinitiv and FactSet. CoinDesk, itself acquired by crypto exchange operator Bullish from Digital Currency Group in November 2023, bought CCData and its CryptoCompare retail site in November 2024 and completed the rebrand to CoinDesk Data on 18 February 2025, folding the data and index business into CoinDesk's media and events operations. In September 2025, Bullish named David LaValle, previously senior managing director and global head of ETFs at Grayscale Investments and before that CEO of VettaFi, as President of CoinDesk Indices and Data. At the time of his appointment, CoinDesk reported more than 40 billion dollars in assets tracking CoinDesk Indices products such as its Bitcoin Price Index and CoinDesk 20 Index.
