The LSE Directory / Data providers
Dow Jones Newswires is the real-time financial news and data service of Dow Jones and Company, a News Corp subsidiary. It streams continuous market-moving news, corporate and economic event data, and analyst commentary across equities, fixed income, foreign exchange and commodities, drawing on its own newsroom together with sister titles The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, MarketWatch and Investor's Business Daily. It reaches professional users, brokers, traders, analysts, and buy side and sell side fund managers, through direct feeds, third party terminals and redistributors, and developer APIs, and is typically embedded into trading platforms, research systems and white label portals rather than sold as a standalone consumer product. Where Newswires differentiates itself from a general news feed is in machine-readable, low-latency delivery built for automated trading rather than for human reading alone. It introduced the Elementized News Feed in 2007, described by the company as the first machine-readable news feed built for institutional traders, structuring economic and corporate event data so it can be parsed directly into quantitative and algorithmic trading models, and followed it in 2010 with Lexicon, a tool that converts news content into structured, actionable trading signals. Its multicast feed latency is measured in microseconds rather than seconds, aimed at the same automated trading audience that Bloomberg and Thomson Reuters, its two principal competitors, also serve. Dow Jones and Company was founded in 1882 by journalists Charles Dow, Edward Jones and Charles Bergstresser; the newswire itself began as the Dow Jones News Service and was renamed Dow Jones Newswires in 1996 as distribution shifted to electronic feeds. The company stayed under family control for more than a century, from Clarence Barron's 1902 acquisition through the Bancroft family, who held roughly 64 percent of voting power for decades, until News Corp acquired Dow Jones for 5 billion dollars, 60 dollars per share, in a deal that closed on December 13, 2007. Dow Jones has been led by CEO Almar Latour, who is also publisher of The Wall Street Journal, since May 2020. In July 2024, Dow Jones and the London Stock Exchange Group announced a multi-year data, news and analytics partnership under which Dow Jones news content, including Newswires, was integrated into the LSEG Workspace platform, with LSEG deal and league table data embedded across Dow Jones publications and a co-developed news experience planned for early 2025. A year later, in July 2025, Dow Jones Newswires launched an AI-powered French language service that translates 500 to 1,000 Dow Jones and Wall Street Journal stories a day from English into French in real time, using a multi-agent AI workflow paired with human editorial review; the launch followed earlier Korean and Japanese translation services and was announced by Joe Cappitelli, General Manager of Dow Jones Newswires.
