The LSE Directory / Data providers
Dune (originally Dune Analytics) is a blockchain data platform that indexes raw on-chain data, transactions, smart contract calls, token transfers, NFT trades and DeFi activity, from more than 100 blockchains into queryable, structured tables. Users write SQL against this indexed data inside Dune's browser-based query editor, then turn results into interactive charts and dashboards that can be published publicly or kept private. A REST API and data-export tooling let engineering teams pull the same tables into their own applications or data warehouses without running their own blockchain nodes or building a custom indexer. Dune's differentiator is that it standardises noisy, per-chain raw data into a common decoded schema, so a single query can span multiple chains instead of requiring bespoke extraction logic for each protocol. Much of that decoding and query-building work has historically come from a public contributor community the company calls "Wizards," who write and publish decoding logic and dashboards for new protocols, letting coverage scale faster than a purely in-house data-engineering team; combined with free public dashboards, this crowd-sourced model sets Dune apart from closed, enterprise-only on-chain data vendors. Its customer base spans individual crypto analysts and traders, DeFi and NFT protocol teams monitoring their own on-chain activity, and, through API and warehouse-connector products (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery), institutional buyers who want normalised blockchain data delivered into their existing infrastructure. Dune was founded in 2018 in Oslo, Norway, by Fredrik Haga and Mats Olsen, and has described starting out doing manual data clean-up for a single early customer before formalising the product. It raised a $2 million seed round in 2020, an $8 million Series A in November 2021, and a $69.42 million Series B in February 2022 led by Coatue with participation from Multicoin Capital and Dragonfly Capital; the Series B valued the company at $1 billion, giving it unicorn status and bringing disclosed funding to roughly $80 million. By the company's own published figures it now indexes 100+ blockchains and has produced more than 200,000 public dashboards and 1.5 million datasets from millions of user queries. More recently Dune has pushed beyond community dashboards toward direct enterprise data delivery, offering a "Data Hub" and warehouse connectors alongside AI-assisted query tools, positioning itself as infrastructure for institutional desks that want structured on-chain datasets rather than just a dashboard site. It also runs an annual community conference, DuneCon, held in Berlin in 2022 and planned for Buenos Aires in 2025.
