The LSE Directory / Data providers

EODHD (EOD Historical Data), operated by Unicorn Data Services SAS and based in Lyon, France, is a financial market data provider delivering historical, end-of-day, intraday and real-time pricing through a REST API and WebSocket feed. Its catalogue spans stocks, ETFs, funds, indices, forex and crypto, plus end-of-day options data with Greeks for US names, covering more than 60 global exchanges, around 150,000 tickers, roughly 20,000 ETFs, 600 indices and 1,100 forex pairs, with daily price history reaching back over 30 years. Beyond raw pricing it offers company fundamentals, ESG scores, insider transactions, corporate actions, financial news with sentiment tagging, an economic calendar and macroeconomic indicators, accessed via official SDKs, a Python library, Excel and Google Sheets add-ins, an MCP server and a ChatGPT assistant. The company targets self-serve developers, quantitative traders, fintech startups and smaller investment firms rather than large sell-side institutions, competing on price and API simplicity against data vendors that require enterprise sales contracts. Its tiered subscription plans run from a free tier (20 API calls per day) up to commercial and enterprise pricing, with academic discounts for students and university partnerships. EODHD sources exchange data through direct contracts, including the Nasdaq Cloud API for US data and other exchange and vendor feeds for international markets, and pulls fundamentals from regulatory filings such as SEC EDGAR and corporate disclosures, cross-checking against multiple providers. Like most data-only vendors, it states explicitly that it does not provide financial, investment or brokerage services. EODHD traces back to an April 2015 side project by founder Denis Alaev, a Russian computer scientist with prior experience at Yandex, Mail.ru Group and Ahrefs, who initially built a robo-advisory and data-analysis platform called Unicorn Bay. In 2017 he pivoted the business to sell financial data directly through a JSON and CSV API, launching from a single ten-dollar server and landing its first paying customer within a weekend of the relaunch. The company has grown without external venture funding; founder interviews published in 2024 and 2025 (Starter Story, Indie Hackers, HackerNoon, The New Stack) describe it as bootstrapped and profitable, reporting roughly 3.5 million dollars in annual revenue with a small, globally distributed team. As of mid-2026 EODHD continues to expand its API surface, adding an MCP server and a ChatGPT-based assistant so its data can be queried directly by AI agents and coding assistants, alongside its longer-standing Excel, Google Sheets and no-code integrations.
