Messari is a cryptocurrency data and market intelligence platform founded in 2018 and headquartered in New York. It aggregates on-chain and market data, analyst research reports, news, token unlock schedules, fundraising records, social sentiment, and event monitoring across more than 40,000 digital assets, delivering this through a web dashboard plus a REST API used by funds, exchanges, custodians, and developers building on top of crypto data. Within the crowded field of crypto data providers, Messari built its identity as a research-led alternative to pure price-and-volume aggregators, publishing analyst reports and protocol-level metrics products (branded Protocol Metrics and Data Apps) aimed at institutional due diligence rather than retail price checking. It has also run the annual Mainnet conference, one of the industry's established gatherings for crypto builders and investors, which served as a community and marketing anchor for its data business. The company was founded by Ryan Selkis and Dan McArdle in 2018. It raised 21 million dollars in August 2021 and a 35 million dollar Series B in September 2022 led by Brevan Howard's crypto arm, with participation from Morgan Creek Digital, Samsung Next, FTX Ventures, Galaxy Digital, and Coinbase Ventures, valuing the company at approximately 300 million dollars. Selkis stepped down as CEO in July 2024 after a series of controversial posts on social media. Eric Turner then led the company as CEO until March 2026, when Diran Li, previously Messari's CTO, was named CEO alongside a round of layoffs as the company repositioned around AI-driven research tools. In June 2026, industry outlet Blockworks acquired Messari for a reported price above 10 million dollars, a steep markdown from its 2022 valuation that reflected both the leadership turnover and broader pressure on crypto data businesses. The deal combines Messari's asset coverage and API with Blockworks' investor relations and disclosure tooling; Blockworks describes the goal as a single data and compliance system of record for onchain assets, serving asset issuers that need disclosure frameworks and asset underwriters such as funds, regulators, and exchanges.
