The LSE Directory / Data providers

Morningstar Direct is the institutional investment analysis platform built by Morningstar, Inc., combining the firm's fund and security data, independent analyst research, and proprietary rating systems, including the Morningstar Rating (the familiar "star rating") and the Morningstar Medalist Rating, with portfolio construction, performance attribution, stress testing, and custom branded report generation. It covers more than 800,000 investments worldwide, spanning open and closed end funds, ETFs, equities, fixed income, hedge funds, separately managed accounts, variable annuities, and 529 plans, and is delivered as a desktop and web based application aimed at investment research, product, and operations teams. A companion offering, Direct Web Services, launched December 13, 2023, repackages the same underlying data, research, and calculation engines as REST APIs, including an Intelligence Engine API, a portfolio X ray tool, risk scoring, fund screening, and a sustainability screener, so firms can embed Morningstar content into their own client facing applications instead of working inside the Direct desktop client. The platform is built for asset managers, wealth management firms, financial advisors, and institutional research teams rather than retail investors, who are served instead by the separate Morningstar Investor subscription product. Within the investment data and analytics category, its differentiation rests on pairing proprietary, analyst driven ratings and qualitative fund research with raw market data inside one licensed platform, and on breadth of coverage that extends beyond public securities into less liquid holdings such as hedge funds, separately managed accounts, and variable annuities. Access is sold as enterprise, seat based licensing rather than a self serve subscription, consistent with its institutional customer base. Morningstar, Inc. was founded in 1984 by Joe Mansueto, who started the company from a Chicago apartment with roughly $80,000 in seed capital; Mansueto remains chairman and Kunal Kapoor is chief executive. The parent company trades on Nasdaq under ticker MORN, is headquartered in Chicago with offices across 29 countries, and reported full year 2025 revenue of $2.445 billion, up 7.5% from $2.275 billion in 2024. Morningstar has built its data and analytics business partly through acquisition, including Ibbotson Associates (2006), PitchBook Data (2016, $225 million), the DBRS credit rating agency (2019, $669 million, now Morningstar DBRS), and the ESG research firm Sustainalytics (2020); in 2025, PitchBook contributed $671.8 million in revenue (up 8.6%) and the Morningstar Credit segment that includes DBRS contributed $354.4 million (up 21.7%), Morningstar's fastest growing major segment that year. In March 2026, Morningstar introduced a new generative AI assistant built into the Direct Advisory Suite workflow, initially rolled out to a subset of US based users with broader US and Canadian availability planned through the rest of 2026. It replaces Mo, the chatbot Morningstar had run inside Direct since April 2023, and is designed to help advisors identify meaningful rating changes, prepare meeting briefs, and turn client statements into proposals without leaving the platform.
