OANDA Exchange Rates API is a business-facing foreign exchange data product operated by OANDA, best known as a retail forex and CFD broker. The API delivers daily average rates, real-time streaming rates over REST or FIX, forward rates, and tick-level data, plus OANDA's own FX order book, returned in JSON, XML or CSV. Coverage spans more than 38,000 currency pairs across 200-plus currencies, commodities and precious metals, with over 32 years of historical data and up to 96 fixings a day, sourced from more than 100 central banks and direct connections to over 20 top-tier FX banks. The product's differentiation is that it is built for back-office and compliance use rather than trading. OANDA markets it to auditors, accountants, treasurers, hedge fund managers, and software or product teams who need defensible historical rates for valuation, financial reporting, and FX exposure tracking, with pre-built ERP integrations for Oracle, Microsoft, SAP and Sage Intacct. It is priced as an annual or monthly subscription starting at 4,850 US dollars a year, with a 7 day free trial, and is sold as a distinct line item from OANDA's fxTrade retail brokerage, even though both draw on the same underlying market-making infrastructure. OANDA was co-founded in 1996 by Michael Stumm, a computer engineering professor at the University of Toronto, and Richard Olsen of the econometric research firm Olsen Ltd; the company says it was incorporated in Delaware and that by 1998 it was the first company to publish exchange rate data on the internet free of charge, which became the basis of today's paid API business. Later milestones include the 2001 launch of the fxTrade retail platform, a 2007 venture capital raise, and a 2011 European headquarters opening in London. The group holds regulatory licenses across multiple jurisdictions, including the CFTC and NFA in the United States, the FCA in the United Kingdom, ASIC in Australia and CIRO in Canada. Disclosed customers of the data business include PwC, Airbnb, FedEx, Amazon and Disney. Ownership of the group has changed hands twice since 2018: CVC Capital Partners acquired OANDA that year, then sold it to the prop-trading firm FTMO, which signed the purchase agreement in early 2025 and completed the deal on December 1, 2025 after clearing approvals from five regulators. FTMO has stated it intends to run OANDA as a standalone business within the combined group, so the exchange rates API's product line and pricing were not reported to have changed as part of the transaction.
