The LSE Directory / Exchanges

TMX Group Limited is the operator of Canada's principal securities and derivatives markets, headquartered in Toronto and itself listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange under ticker X. Its core exchanges are the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) for senior equities, the TSX Venture Exchange (TSXV) for early stage and development stage companies, TSX Alpha Exchange as a lower cost alternative trading venue, and the Montreal Exchange (MX), Canada's exchange for listed derivatives such as equity options, index futures, and interest rate products. Clearing and settlement run through the Canadian Depository for Securities (CDS) and the Canadian Derivatives Clearing Corporation (CDCC), and TMX also holds a minority (about 40 percent equity, 20 percent voting) stake in the Boston Options Exchange (BOX) in the United States. TMX differentiates itself from other exchange groups through its concentration in natural resources listings: TSX and TSXV together list more mining companies than any other market in the world, close to half of the world's public mining issuers, and TMX markets this position actively to resource sector issuers and investors through dedicated mining sector programs and events such as PDAC. Beyond trading and listings, TMX has built out a Global Insights data and analytics segment, comprising TMX Datalinx (market data), TMX Trayport (a European wholesale energy and commodities trading platform), TMX VettaFi (ETF and index data, education, and digital distribution tools), and TMX Money, positioning the group as much as a data and analytics vendor as a venue operator, which competes with the information services arms of exchange groups such as ICE, Nasdaq, and LSEG rather than just other listing venues. TMX Group Limited was formed on May 1, 2008, when TSX Group completed its acquisition of the Montreal Exchange (agreed for roughly C$1.31 billion in late 2007), bringing Canada's main equities and derivatives exchanges under one parent; the Toronto Stock Exchange itself traces its trading activity back more than 160 years. Trayport, a London based energy trading platform, was acquired by TMX for close to £550 million in December 2017 after UK competition authorities (the CMA) had ordered its previous owner, Intercontinental Exchange, to divest it. TMX built its position in ETF and index analytics by acquiring Wall Street Horizon in November 2022 and then taking full ownership of VettaFi Holdings in a deal completed in 2024, paying roughly US$848 million for the roughly 78 percent of VettaFi it did not already own. John McKenzie has served as CEO since 2020, and the group reported fiscal 2025 revenue of approximately CA$1.72 billion, up about 17.6 percent year over year, with first quarter 2026 revenue of CA$488.2 million, up 16 percent from the prior year period. TMX has been steering its business mix toward the recurring, subscription style revenue of its Global Insights segment following the VettaFi and Wall Street Horizon acquisitions, reducing its historical dependence on trading and listing fee volumes. Its most recent earnings releases and investor materials continue to report growth concentrated in market data and analytics alongside its traditional derivatives clearing and equities trading businesses.
