John Gabbert is the founder of PitchBook Data, Inc., a Seattle-based company providing data, research, and technology for the private equity, venture capital, and M&A markets. He founded the company in 2007 and served as its Chief Executive Officer for 17 years, growing it into a leading data provider before Morningstar, Inc. acquired it in December 2016 for approximately $225 million; PitchBook has continued to operate as a Morningstar subsidiary. Prior to founding PitchBook, Gabbert worked in research and operations roles at VentureOne Corporation and later served as managing director of private markets at Dow Jones & Company. He stepped down as CEO of PitchBook in mid-2024, remaining connected to the company, and subsequently joined ODIN + Co. as a managing partner in January 2025.
