The LSE Directory / Fundamental data
Crunchbase is a private-markets data platform that maintains profiles of millions of public and private companies, covering funding rounds, investors, acquisitions, leadership changes and other firmographic data. The dataset is accessed through a web application, paid subscription tiers, an API and a data-licensing business, and Crunchbase layers AI-based predictive scoring on top of it, surfacing outcome predictions such as funding, acquisition, IPO and growth likelihood alongside insights on partnerships and product launches. The company specialises in private-company and early-stage venture data rather than public-market fundamentals, which separates it from traditional financial data vendors. Its data is sourced from more than 4,000 venture-firm partnerships and over 1,000 news and regulatory sources, plus contributions from its user community, and is validated through AI grading algorithms and a human analyst review team; its own product page cites more than 30 million verified data updates a year. Target customers span venture investors, go-to-market and sales teams, market researchers and entrepreneurs, served through Crunchbase Pro (individual subscriptions), Crunchbase Business and Enterprise (team and CRM-integrated access with API), and a licensing business that embeds its data into third-party products; Yahoo Finance, MarketWatch, Atomico and Clay are named as licensees on its own data-licensing page. Crunchbase was founded in May 2007 by TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington as a supplementary database to track startups covered in TechCrunch articles. It was owned by AOL from AOL's September 2010 acquisition of TechCrunch until 2015, when it was spun out as the independent Crunchbase, Inc. with an initial $8.5 million raise. It subsequently raised an $18 million Series B in 2017 (Mayfield Fund), a $30 million Series C in 2019 that valued the company at roughly $150 million post-money (led by OMERS Ventures), and a $50 million Series D in July 2022 led by Alignment Growth with participation from OMERS Ventures, Mayfield Fund and Emergence; CEO Jager McConnell described the round as a significant step up from the Series C valuation. Around that Series D, Crunchbase reported roughly 75 million unique annual users, about 60,000 paying subscribers and a 2022 annual recurring revenue target of $38 million; Wikipedia currently cites the platform as serving more than 80 million users. Jager McConnell has served as CEO through this period. In 2025 Crunchbase extended distribution of its dataset by integrating its firmographic and funding data into Perplexity Enterprise Pro and by making its predictive company intelligence available through the Databricks Marketplace. In late January 2026, Crunchbase confirmed a data breach after the group ShinyHunters claimed to have exfiltrated more than 2 million records from its corporate network and published roughly 400 MB of the stolen files; reporting attributed initial access to a voice-phishing attack against an employee's Okta single sign-on credentials. Crunchbase stated that a threat actor exfiltrated certain documents but that no business operations were disrupted, and said it engaged forensic investigators and law enforcement.
