PitchBook is a financial data and software company built around the PitchBook Platform, a web application, API and mobile product that lets subscribers search and screen companies, investors, deals, funds, limited partners and the people behind them across venture capital, private equity, M&A, private credit and related private-market segments. Data is delivered through the platform itself, an Excel plug-in, an API, industry news coverage and periodic research reports, and is collected and structured by a large in-house data operations team rather than sourced purely from public filings. The company's specialisation is depth and structure in markets that lack the standardised public disclosure of listed equities: private company financials, cap tables, fund performance benchmarks, LP-GP relationships and deal terms that are otherwise scattered across press releases, SEC filings and private networks. Its customer base is private equity and venture capital firms, investment banks, corporate development and M&A teams, law firms, lenders and limited partners, who use it for deal sourcing, due diligence, fundraising and valuation benchmarking. In November 2025 it launched PitchBook Navigator, a natural-language research tool built on its data plus a combined "AI and human insight" verification layer, alongside a Model Context Protocol connector that lets subscribers query PitchBook data inside ChatGPT. PitchBook was founded in Seattle in 2007 by John Gabbert, who ran the company as CEO until stepping down in mid-2024; he had previously spent nine years at VentureOne Corporation before starting PitchBook. Morningstar, an early investor holding roughly 20 percent of the company, completed a full acquisition in December 2016 in a deal valuing PitchBook at 225 million dollars, and PitchBook has operated as a Morningstar subsidiary since. As of its May 2025 data snapshot, the company reported coverage of nearly six million companies, about 2.7 million investments, 570,000 investors, 56,000 limited partners and 147,000 funds, gathered by a data operations team the company describes as more than 1,800 researchers. Per its standard company boilerplate, PitchBook now operates globally with more than 3,000 team members across offices including Seattle, San Francisco, New York, London, Singapore and Mumbai, serving over 100,000 professionals worldwide. In May 2026, Morningstar and PitchBook announced an integration with the Perplexity AI platform, using Model Context Protocol connectors to let eligible users pull Morningstar- and PitchBook-backed research and citation-based answers directly into Perplexity, extending the same MCP-based AI distribution approach first introduced with the November 2025 Navigator and OpenAI integration.
