The LSE Directory / Fundamental data
S&P Global Market Intelligence is the data and analytics division of S&P Global Inc. (NYSE: SPGI). Its core offering is company fundamentals, financial statement data, analyst estimates, and market and reference data, delivered mainly through two products: the S&P Capital IQ Pro platform and the Compustat standardized fundamentals database. Data reaches customers through the web platform itself, an Excel add-in, bulk data feeds such as Xpressfeed, and cloud delivery via Snowflake and Databricks, alongside credit-related feeds like RatingsDirect and RatingsXpress. The division serves institutional users, investment banks, asset managers, private equity and venture firms, corporates, and academic researchers who need to screen companies, build financial models, and analyze securities across public and private markets. Its point of differentiation against other fundamentals vendors is depth in private markets: Capital IQ Pro lists more than 109,000 public companies and over 60 million private companies, with more than 110,000 private equity and venture capital funds tracked, an area where standardized-fundamentals rivals typically have thinner coverage. Compustat, the standardized dataset underneath much of this, is separately licensed to academic institutions, for example through Wharton Research Data Services, and covers roughly 99,000 global securities, about 99 percent of world market capitalization. Compustat traces back to 1962, when it was launched by the credit rating agency Standard & Poor's; it carries annual company data back to 1950 and quarterly data back to 1962, depending on when each company was added. S&P Global Market Intelligence itself was formed in 2015 when S&P Global merged its existing Capital IQ business with SNL Financial LC, an acquisition valued at roughly $2.23 billion. Its parent, S&P Global, traces its roots to an 1888 predecessor publication, took the Standard & Poor's name after acquiring the ratings agency in 1966, and rebranded from McGraw Hill Financial to S&P Global in 2016; sister divisions include S&P Global Ratings, S&P Dow Jones Indices, and S&P Global Mobility. Group-wide, S&P Global reported 2024 revenue of $14.2 billion and about 42,350 employees, and is headquartered in New York City. In March 2026, S&P Global added generative-AI features to Capital IQ Pro, including ProntoNLP sentiment analysis of earnings-call transcripts inside its Document Intelligence tool, more than 4 million additional structured securities sourced from Markit, expanded biopharma pipeline data through Visible Alpha, and the acquisition of Drift AI, a natural-language Excel modeling tool, for integration into the Capital IQ Pro Excel plug-in. In May 2026, S&P Global announced that Saugata Saha, President of Market Intelligence and Chief Enterprise Data Officer, would leave the company effective July 30, 2026, with the division's Enterprise Data Organization folded into a newly unified Chief Technology and Transformation Office under Firdaus Bhathena; a permanent successor for the Market Intelligence presidency had not been named as of that announcement.
