The LSE Directory / Fundamental data
SimFin is a cloud based financial analytics platform that extracts, standardises and distributes company fundamental data drawn from published financial statements. Its core product combines a web based stock screener and backtester with a Data API, an Excel plugin, bulk CSV and JSON downloads, and an open source Python package (pip install simfin, documented on GitHub and Read the Docs), giving users balance sheet, income statement and cash flow line items plus thousands of derived ratios and daily share prices. Coverage runs to roughly 5,000 mostly US listed companies, with European and Asian coverage stated by the company as expanding, and history reaching up to 20 years on the top data tier. SimFin's stated differentiator against data vendors that resell an exchange or index provider feed is that it generates the large majority of its dataset, the company says over 99 percent, independently, by extracting figures out of company filings with its own machine learning and value verification algorithms rather than licensing a pre built feed; its own about page states this pipeline calculates more than 28 million metrics daily. The product is positioned less toward institutional trading desks and more toward individual value investors, quant hobbyists, academic researchers and machine learning practitioners. A free tier with delayed data (roughly a 12 month lag on the API per its own documentation) and no credit card requirement, combined with the openly documented Python package and GitHub repository, has made SimFin a commonly cited data source in retail backtesting projects and machine learning tutorials rather than a Bloomberg or FactSet style terminal replacement. The operating company, SimFin Analytics GmbH, was founded in 2015 by Thomas Flassbeck, who built the underlying machine learning data engine and serves as CEO, together with co-founder Felix Wolf, who leads marketing and distribution. It is headquartered in Halle (Saale), Germany, and LinkedIn lists a small team of 2 to 10 employees. In 2022 the company completed a capital raise with IBG Risikokapitalfonds, a fund managed by bmp Ventures that backs early stage companies in Saxony-Anhalt. Pricing is structured as three tiers, Free, Basic and Pro, with the Data API included at every level and the paid tiers primarily buying faster data delivery rather than gating core content. As of mid 2026 the company continues to frame its roadmap around extending coverage beyond its US core dataset into European and Asian equities, and its own website cites usage or mentions by platforms including Wikifolio and Benzinga alongside its data claims.
