The LSE Directory / Fundamental data
WRDS, Wharton Research Data Services, is a web-based research data platform operated by the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. It does not collect or own most of the data itself; instead it licenses, cleans, standardises and hosts more than 600 databases from over 60 third-party data vendors, and gives subscribers one uniform web interface, a query builder and a hosted computing environment to pull from all of them without negotiating separate access to each source. Datasets available through the platform include CRSP, Compustat, IBES, NYSE TAQ, OptionMetrics, Bureau van Dijk and, since a 2012 partnership, FactSet's institutional and mutual fund ownership database, spanning finance, accounting, banking, economics, ESG, healthcare, insurance and marketing. WRDS specialises in academic and institutional research support rather than retail or real-time trading data. Its customers are universities, business schools, government agencies and corporate research departments, not individual traders. The technical differentiator is the WRDS Cloud, an SSH-accessible computing environment supporting SAS, Python, R, Stata and MATLAB (with SAS Studio, RStudio and Jupyter available), built so that a researcher can run large-scale statistical work directly against the hosted data rather than downloading raw files. This combination of a licensed multi-vendor data catalogue plus a shared compute layer, aimed at reproducible academic research, distinguishes it from single-vendor commercial data terminals and from pure data marketplaces that do not host analysis infrastructure. WRDS was developed in 1993 to support faculty research at Wharton and has since grown into a subscription service used well beyond Penn. As of recent published figures on its own site, it hosts over 350 terabytes of data, serves more than 75,000 commercial, academic and government users, and reaches over 500 subscribing institutions across more than 35 countries, with data delivery cited at up to 400MB per second on its cloud infrastructure. A 2012 press release from Wharton's own newsroom recorded that WRDS had, at that time, roughly 30,000 users in 28 countries and around 200 terabytes of data, giving a sense of the platform's growth trajectory over the following decade; that release also named Robert Zarazowski as WRDS Senior Director at the time of the FactSet ownership-database integration. WRDS positions itself as a long-running fixture of academic finance infrastructure rather than a newer entrant, with continuity of access described in its own materials as spanning "25+ years" of operation as of recent copy on its website. It remains primarily a research and teaching resource, accessed by faculty, PhD students and other credentialed researchers through their home institution's subscription rather than sold directly to the public.
