Balyasny Asset Management (BAM) is a multi-strategy hedge fund manager based in Chicago that runs a pod-based investment platform: dozens of semi-autonomous portfolio management teams, or pods, trade against firm capital under a shared risk and technology infrastructure, each pod running its own book within a strategy such as equities long/short, fixed income and macro, commodities, multi-asset arbitrage or systematic and quantitative trading. The firm organizes itself around four functional groups, investment teams that generate ideas, risk teams that monitor exposure, technology teams that build internal tools including AI assisted research systems, and a business infrastructure group that runs operations, so that individual pods can focus on generating returns rather than running their own back office. BAM competes in the multi-manager, multi-strategy segment of the hedge fund industry, a category that also includes firms such as Citadel, Millennium and Point72, and it differentiates itself through its pod structure and ongoing investment in proprietary technology and AI tooling for its investment teams, including an internally built ChatGPT style system rolled out in 2023 and a recurring internal AI hackathon. Its client base is institutional and high net worth: the firm's pooled investment vehicles are offered only to accredited investors, qualified purchasers and qualified clients under U.S. securities exemptions, not sold to the retail public. Beyond its core hedge fund pods, BAM has extended into adjacent strategies, standing up Corbets Capital, a growth-equity vehicle based in New York and Greenwich, Connecticut, in 2022, and launching BAM Corner Point in 2025 as its first dedicated venture capital fund targeting early-stage enterprise technology companies. BAM was founded in Chicago in December 2001 by Dmitry Balyasny, Scott Schroeder and Taylor O'Malley; the firm was originally named Balyasny Capital Management before adopting its current name in 2004 and registering with the SEC as an investment adviser in 2006. Dmitry Balyasny remains managing partner and chief investment officer and, per the firm's SEC filings, holds roughly 70 percent ownership; Taylor O'Malley serves as co-founding partner and chairman and Scott Schroeder as co-founding partner. The firm's flagship fund, Atlas Enhanced, takes its name from Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged. BAM weathered a severe drawdown in 2018, when assets fell from about 12 billion dollars to 6 billion dollars and the firm cut roughly 125 jobs, about a fifth of its headcount, before rebuilding through 2019. As of June 2026 the firm reports about 37 billion dollars in assets under management and more than 2,000 investment and support staff across more than 20 offices in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, including a Dubai office opened in 2023. Heading into mid-2026 the firm continues to invest in systematic and AI-driven investing and to expand in Asia, having named Francine Fang as global head of its systematic strategy, and it runs an internal program called Anthem to develop portfolio managers in house rather than relying solely on lateral hires from competitors.
