The LSE Directory / Hedge funds
Bridgewater Associates, LP is a Westport, Connecticut based investment management firm that runs global macro hedge funds for institutional clients. Its two principal offerings are Pure Alpha, a diversified macro strategy that holds 30 to 40 simultaneous positions across bonds, currencies, equity indices and commodities, and All Weather, a risk parity fund built to perform across different growth and inflation environments; a third fund, Pure Alpha Major Markets, offers a more liquid version of the flagship strategy. The firm invests through pooled vehicles and separately managed accounts and is registered with the SEC as an investment adviser. Bridgewater's method is built on codifying rules about cause and effect relationships in economies and markets into systematic decision processes, combined with human judgment. It extends this with AIA Labs, a unit formed in 2023 to apply machine learning and large language models to macro forecasting; in 2024 it launched an AI driven fund built using models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity. Unlike many macro managers, Bridgewater serves only large institutional investors, pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, endowments, foundations and central banks, and does not offer products to retail investors. Its research arm publishes "Daily Observations," a paid macro research note read widely by central bank officials and institutional asset allocators, functioning as both a research product and a client relationship tool separate from its trading operations. Ray Dalio founded the firm in 1975 out of a two bedroom apartment in New York before relocating it to Westport, Connecticut in 1981; Pure Alpha launched in 1989 and All Weather in 1996, with All Weather managing roughly $46 billion within the wider firm as of the mid 2020s. Dalio stepped down as co-CEO in 2017, and Nir Bar Dea became sole CEO in March 2023, working alongside co-Chief Investment Officers Greg Jensen, Bob Prince and Karen Karniol-Tambour. The firm employed roughly 1,300 people as of 2025 and has deliberately shrunk from a peak of around $150 billion to $160 billion in assets earlier in the 2010s to about $92 billion at the end of 2024, after returning capital to investors and capping the flagship fund near $50 billion to $60 billion to preserve trading agility. Bridgewater is equally known for "radical transparency," a management culture documented in Dalio's book Principles, involving recorded meetings, open critique and real time peer ratings that outsiders have called intense and insiders describe as central to its edge. Bridgewater marked its 50th anniversary in 2025 with its strongest calendar year on record: Pure Alpha returned about 33 percent, All Weather about 20 percent, and its AI driven AIA Macro fund about 12 percent, outperforming most large peer funds, while the firm continues to expand AI research through AIA Labs alongside its traditional discretionary macro process.
