The LSE Directory / Hedge funds

Millennium Management LLC is a multi-strategy hedge fund and alternative investment firm headquartered in New York. Rather than pursue one house investment view, it runs a "platform" model in which capital is allocated across more than 340 semi-autonomous investment teams, each running its own book across fundamental equity, equity and index arbitrage, fixed income, commodities, quantitative and systematic trading, and credit, with its own risk limits and profit-and-loss accountability. The firm states it trades across more than 100 global exchanges in 45-plus currencies. Millennium's differentiation within the multi-manager, or "pod shop," category, alongside firms such as Citadel and Point72, is scale paired with strict, centrally enforced risk control. Portfolio managers are capitalized individually and cut loose if they breach tight drawdown limits, while market data, execution infrastructure and risk oversight are shared centrally across teams. As of September 2025, trade press ranked it the largest pod shop in the US by assets, with roughly double the headcount of rivals such as Citadel and Point72. The model targets institutional allocators, pensions, endowments and sovereign wealth funds seeking market-neutral, low-correlation returns rather than direct market beta. The firm was founded in 1989 by Israel Englander together with Ronald Shear, who left the partnership after about six months; Englander, a former floor broker and specialist on the American Stock Exchange, built out the platform model and remains Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Millennium has been registered with the SEC as an investment adviser since March 2012; its master fund, Millennium Partners LP, is organized in the Cayman Islands. Independent reporting put its assets under management at roughly $87 billion as of May 2026, up from about $79 billion in September 2025, while the firm's SEC Form ADV reports a much larger regulatory assets figure near $200 billion once gross, leveraged exposure is counted. The firm employs more than 6,800 people across 18 primary offices and 140-plus total locations, including London, Hong Kong, Dubai, Singapore, Tel Aviv, Tokyo and Paris. In a notable reversal, Bobby Jain, Millennium's former co-Chief Investment Officer who left in 2023 to launch the rival multi-strategy fund Jain Global, struck a deal announced on 27 April 2026 to return roughly $6 billion in outside investor capital and have Jain Global manage money exclusively for Millennium going forward. Millennium has also been targeting a fresh capital raise of at least $10 billion during 2026, continuing its post-pandemic growth run.
