The LSE Directory / Hedge funds

WorldQuant LLC is a quantitative investment management firm, founded in 2007 and headquartered in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, that trades using systematic, data-driven models rather than discretionary stock-picking. The firm builds and continuously tests large numbers of predictive trading models, called "alphas" internally, drawn from a research library it has described as holding millions of such signals built from both conventional market data and alternative data sets such as shipping statistics and credit card receipts. Portfolio managers combine these alpha signals into live strategies, historically centered on statistical arbitrage across equities and other asset classes. WorldQuant's main differentiator versus other quant shops is how it sources its signals. Rather than keeping research fully in house, it runs BRAIN, a public, web based platform through which outside researchers and students anywhere in the world can build and submit alphas using more than 85,000 available data types and a built in backtesting simulator, earning compensation for signals the firm uses (the firm has cited quarterly payments of $8,000 or more for its top ranked "Grandmaster" consultants). This crowdsourced, volume driven research model, which the firm describes as "quantity enables quality", is paired with an education and outreach arm. WorldQuant University, founded in 2015, offers a free, accredited online Master's in Financial Engineering, and the firm runs an annual global research contest, the International Quant Championship (originally the WorldQuant Challenge, launched 2018), which had drawn roughly 80,000 participants by 2025. The firm was founded by Igor Tulchinsky, who spent roughly 12 years as a portfolio manager at hedge fund Millennium Management before spinning out WorldQuant using Millennium's capital and infrastructure; he remains Founder, Chairman and CEO. Tulchinsky previously worked as a scientist at AT&T Bell Laboratories and as a video game programmer, and holds an MBA in finance and entrepreneurship from the University of Pennsylvania. As of 2025 WorldQuant employed roughly 1,100 people across 28 offices worldwide, including offices in nontraditional financial centers such as Budapest, Mumbai, Ho Chi Minh City and Seoul. For most of its history the firm traded exclusively as Millennium's in house quantitative arm; it began managing money for outside investors in 2018 through WorldQuant Millennium Advisors (WMA), a joint venture with Millennium founder Israel Englander that launched with $2.3 billion. WMA's externally managed assets have grown quickly since, from the $2.3 billion 2018 launch to about $10 billion by mid-2024 (alongside a separate pool the firm continued running exclusively for Millennium), and to nearly $30 billion by early 2026, taking total assets under WorldQuant's management to roughly $40 billion. Firm leadership has stated a long term goal of reaching $100 billion in assets under management across its platforms.
