PEAK6 Investments is a diversified financial and investment firm built around two core lines: PEAK6 Capital Management, a proprietary options trading and market-making operation, and PEAK6 Strategic Capital, which deploys long-term capital into technology-driven ventures across fintech, insurance, education and other sectors. Rather than running a single fund, the firm operates as an internal builder and permanent-capital investor, both operating businesses it built itself (Apex Fintech Solutions, We Insure, Bruce Markets, Zogo, Evil Geniuses) and holding minority stakes in outside companies through its investment arm. Its market-making arm, PEAK6 Capital Management, differs from many options market makers by accumulating and holding option inventory over extended periods, from days to years, rather than flattening positions intraday, using proprietary technology to manage long and short option books while supplying liquidity to both institutional counterparties and retail order flow; MarketsWiki describes it as one of the largest options trading operations in the U.S. On the venture side, PEAK6 Strategic Capital positions itself against typical venture capital by investing what it calls patient capital outside conventional fundraising cycles, and it frequently builds companies in house, such as Apex, We Insure and Bruce Markets, rather than only writing checks into outside startups; its own history as an options trading firm has repeatedly steered capital toward market infrastructure and fintech plumbing rather than consumer apps. PEAK6 was founded in 1997 in Chicago by Matt Hulsizer and Jenny Just, former options traders at O'Connor & Associates, with roughly 1.5 million dollars in seed capital from former colleagues and family. The firm built the online brokerage OptionsHouse starting in 2006 and sold it to private equity firm General Atlantic in 2014; General Atlantic subsequently sold OptionsHouse to E*Trade for 725 million dollars in 2016. In 2012, PEAK6 acquired the clearing business of Penson Worldwide for 60 million dollars and built it into Apex Clearing Corporation, now Apex Fintech Solutions, whose custody and clearing infrastructure underpins retail brokerages including Robinhood, Wealthfront and Betterment. The firm also spun out a 2.3 billion dollar hedge fund as Achievement Asset Management in 2014 and acquired esports organization Evil Geniuses in 2019, whose VALORANT Champions Tour team won the 2023 world championship. PEAK6 relocated its global headquarters from Chicago to Austin, Texas, effective January 1, 2025, after first opening an Austin office in 2021; the firm now describes itself as operating across 16 offices globally, having made more than 65 capital investments through a portfolio of eight core businesses. Its most recent build is Bruce Markets, an overnight U.S. equities alternative trading system, Bruce ATS, built on Nasdaq exchange technology. Bruce ATS received FINRA and SEC approval and opened for business on March 12, 2025, running Sunday through Thursday from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. Eastern time to connect the U.S. after-hours and pre-market sessions, and in June 2025 it closed a strategic investment round backed by Apex Fintech Solutions, Fidelity Investments, Nasdaq Ventures, NH Investment and Securities, PEAK6 Investments, Robinhood, tastytrade and Webull.
