The LSE Directory / Index providers

FTSE Russell is a global index and benchmark provider, wholly owned by London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG). It designs, calculates and licenses rules based indices spanning equities, fixed income, real estate, infrastructure, digital assets, benchmark rates, dividends, factor and smart beta, Shariah compliant and multi asset strategies. Asset owners, asset managers, ETF providers and investment banks license its indices to benchmark portfolio performance and to build investment funds, ETFs, structured products and index based derivatives, with the Russell US Indexes alone underpinning roughly 12.2 trillion dollars of investor assets and an estimated 20 trillion dollars benchmarked across the full FTSE Russell index family, according to LSEG's own 2026 disclosures. Its two flagship franchises illustrate a split identity that differentiates it from single market index shops. The FTSE side, rooted in London, produces UK and international benchmarks such as the FTSE 100, FTSE 250 and FTSE All Share, plus the FTSE Global Equity Index Series and the FTSE World Government Bond Index; the Russell side, rooted in the US, produces the Russell 1000, Russell 2000 and Russell 3000, which are reconstituted on a scheduled cycle each year (moving to a semi annual reconstitution frequency for Russell US Indexes from 2026) using published, non discretionary methodology rather than a selection committee. That objective, rules based construction, and the combined UK plus US index franchise under one roof, is the main way it is positioned against committee based benchmark providers. The FTSE Russell brand was launched in May 2015, integrating FTSE Group with the Russell Indexes business that LSEG acquired from Frank Russell Company in December 2014 (LSEG divested Russell's separate asset management arm the same year). At launch, the combined business described itself as calculating thousands of indices covering more than 80 countries and benchmarking roughly 98 percent of the investable market globally, with its indices traded on more than 25 exchanges worldwide. FTSE International Limited, the entity behind the FTSE and Russell benchmarks, is authorised and regulated as a benchmark administrator by the UK Financial Conduct Authority and listed on the FCA Benchmarks Register, operating under the UK and EU Benchmark Regulations; a related EU entity, FTSE EU SAS, is separately authorised in the EU. FTSE Russell also acquired the corporate data firm Mergent in 2015. Current activity centres on the ongoing evolution of the Russell US Indexes methodology, including the move to semi annual reconstitution starting in 2026 and IPO fast entry enhancements for newly listed companies, alongside continued expansion of its sustainable investing and private markets benchmark offerings.
