The LSE Directory / Index providers
Solactive AG is an independent financial index provider based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It designs, calculates and licenses indices across equities, fixed income, commodities, currencies, interest rates, derivatives and multi-asset strategies, which asset managers and banks then use as the underlying benchmark for exchange traded funds, structured products and actively managed fund mandates. The firm operates its own index calculation platform and data infrastructure rather than reselling a third party's index engine. Solactive specialises in custom and white-label index construction: rather than promoting a small set of flagship benchmarks, it builds bespoke indices to a client's specification, covering thematic exposure, ESG and sustainability screens, factor and smart-beta strategies, currency-hedged and leveraged variants, and geographic mandates spanning developed, emerging and frontier markets. This client-driven, build-to-order model is how it differentiates itself from legacy benchmark families such as those of MSCI or S&P; its stated pitch emphasises speed of execution, flexible pricing and technical customisation of weighting, rebalancing and total-return conventions. Its customers are primarily ETF issuers, investment banks structuring index-linked products, and asset managers seeking a benchmark tailored to a specific strategy. The company was founded in Frankfurt in October 2007 by Steffen Scheuble, initially under the name Structured Solutions, and rebranded to Solactive in 2013. It acquired the S-Box index platform from the Stuttgart Stock Exchange in 2009 and acquired Global Property Research B.V. in 2021, the same year it opened an Amsterdam office; it also has offices in Berlin, Dresden, Toronto and Hong Kong. Steffen Scheuble remains CEO, with Timo Pfeiffer as Chief Markets Officer and Nicolas Bös as Chief Technology Officer. Solactive is registered as a benchmark administrator with Germany's BaFin under the EU Benchmarks Regulation and states it complies with IOSCO's Principles for Financial Benchmarks. As of 2026 the firm states it calculates over 15,000 indices; a widely cited 2022 figure put assets linked to Solactive indices at more than USD 250 billion across over 500 ETFs, though that figure predates 2026 and current totals were not independently confirmed in this research. Solactive indices underpin ETFs from issuers including HANetf and Global X, among others; examples include the Solactive ETC Group Global Metaverse Index (tracked by ETC Group and HANetf's METR ETF) and the Solactive Thematic Growth Index (tracked by Global X's GXTG ETF). It continues to launch new thematic and sector indices, including tracking a Capital Investment Trust Corporation US tech ETF announced in June 2026.
