The LSE Directory / Index providers
STOXX Ltd is a Zug, Switzerland based index provider that develops, calculates, maintains and licenses rules based, transparent stock market indices used as benchmarks and as the underlying for ETFs, futures, options, structured products and passive funds. It administers more than 18,000 indices, including its flagship EURO STOXX 50 blue chip benchmark, the broader STOXX Europe 600, and the DAX index family, Germany's headline equity benchmark, plus specialized lines spanning volatility (VSTOXX), fixed income, thematic, factor based and ESG, climate and biodiversity indices. STOXX and DAX indices are licensed to more than 550 companies worldwide for use in exchange traded products, derivatives and investment funds, and STOXX acts as the regulated benchmark administrator for these index families under the EU Benchmark Regulation. Within the index provider category, STOXX's differentiation is its position as the dedicated administrator of Europe's most heavily traded blue chip benchmark, EURO STOXX 50, and of Germany's DAX, giving it a concentrated hold on the derivatives and ETF flow tied to continental European equities, an area where global index houses compete at the margin rather than the center. Its customer base is institutional: exchanges (notably Eurex, where EURO STOXX 50 futures and options are among the most actively traded equity index derivatives), ETF issuers, banks structuring products, and asset managers benchmarking European mandates. Since 2023 STOXX has operated inside ISS STOXX, pairing its index calculation business with ISS's governance, ESG and market intelligence data, positioning it to bundle index licensing with proxy voting and ESG scoring in a way pure play index providers do not. STOXX began operations in 1998 with the launch of the EURO STOXX 50, initially as a joint venture that included Dow Jones; Deutsche Börse and SIX Group became joint owners in December 2009 after Dow Jones's exit, and Deutsche Börse acquired SIX Group's remaining 49.9 percent stake in 2015 for CHF 650 million to take full ownership. In 2019, STOXX was combined with the analytics firm Axioma to form Qontigo, a Deutsche Börse Group business; that Qontigo brand was retired in November 2023 when Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) folded Qontigo's index business into a newly formed ISS STOXX, majority owned by Deutsche Börse Group, with the combined organization reporting more than 3,400 employees across 33 locations in 19 countries and roughly 6,400 clients. STOXX's offices sit in Zug, with additional locations in New York, Eschborn (Germany) and London. As of 2025, STOXX linked ETFs held roughly EUR 189 billion in assets under management, up 51 percent on the year on EUR 35.1 billion of net inflows, with EURO STOXX 50 alone underlying more than EUR 25 billion of ETF assets and more than 160,000 listed structured products; on Eurex, EURO STOXX 50 futures and options together traded roughly 447 million contracts in 2024 (FESX futures at EUR 39.5 billion notional average daily volume, OESX options at EUR 44 billion), underscoring the index's role as the primary hedging and trading instrument for pan European equity exposure.
