Robin J. Brooks is a senior fellow in Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution, where his research covers global growth and inflation dynamics, capital flows to emerging and frontier markets, and Western sanctions policy including the G7 oil price cap on Russia. He was previously managing director and chief economist at the Institute of International Finance (2017-2024), chief FX strategist at Goldman Sachs in New York (2010-2017), an economist at Brevan Howard, and spent eight years at the IMF working on its fair-value models for foreign exchange. He holds a PhD in economics from Yale (1998) and a BSc in monetary economics from the LSE (1993), and is widely followed for his chart-driven commentary on X, where his account showed roughly 381,000 followers as of July 2026. He also writes a daily global-macro Substack newsletter and is a frequent commentator in the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, CNBC, and Bloomberg.
