The LSE Directory / Retail brokers

BUX is an Amsterdam-based mobile brokerage app that lets retail customers buy and sell fractional shares, ETFs and ETCs, and set up automated monthly Investment Plans, either self-directed or built around a theme or a curated model portfolio. The app runs on three subscription tiers, Basic, Plus and Prime, trading a flat monthly fee for lower per-order commissions, a set number of zero-commission "Zero Orders" each month, cheaper foreign exchange conversion on US stocks, and interest paid on uninvested cash, up to 2.00 percent on the Prime tier. BUX targets younger, first-time and mobile-first investors across continental Europe rather than active traders, and markets its zero-commission trading as funded by subscription and FX-spread revenue rather than payment for order flow, a positioning it uses to differentiate from PFOF-reliant rivals. Its Prime tier includes automated "Prime Plans" curated by J.P. Morgan's investment specialists, and from January 2023 it also ran a BlackRock iShares ETF savings-plan product, letting users build multi-ETF monthly savings portfolios from a minimum of 10 euro per fund. The company was founded in Amsterdam in July 2013 by Nick Bortot, a former BinckBank executive, and launched its first app, a CFD-based product, in September 2014 before pivoting to commission-free stock and ETF trading with the "BUX Zero" relaunch in September 2019. It raised venture funding through the 2010s from backers including Holtzbrinck Ventures, Orange Growth Capital and Velocity Capital plus a Seedrs crowdfunding round, closing a $12.5 million round in 2019, and acquired the UK broker Ayondo Markets in 2019 and the crypto exchange Blockport in 2020, the latter rebranded BUX Crypto. A prior bid by German neobank N26 to acquire BUX for a reported 200 million euro collapsed after N26 sought lower pricing. BUX is regulated by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) and states it serves over one million users across eight markets: the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria and Ireland. BUX wound down BUX Crypto in March 2024, migrating remaining customer positions to the Dutch platform Coinmerce, shortly before ABN AMRO completed its acquisition of BUX in July 2024, announced the previous December, making it a wholly owned subsidiary that continues to operate under its own brand. Co-founder Yorick Naeff, who had led BUX as CEO since around 2020, moved to become ABN AMRO's Head of Innovation effective 1 February 2026, with Marlou Jenniskens taking over as BUX's CEO from that date.
