Hargreaves Lansdown is a direct-to-investor investment and savings platform based in Bristol, England. It lets retail customers deal shares, funds, ETFs, investment trusts, gilts and bonds, and hold them inside tax-advantaged wrappers such as the Stocks and Shares ISA, Lifetime ISA, Junior ISA and SIPP (self-invested personal pension), alongside a Fund and Share account, an Active Savings account and a Cash ISA. It also offers pension drawdown, annuity and lump-sum access, a foreign currency service, and its own multi-manager unit trusts under the HL Select brand, plus financial advice, stockbroking and group pension scheme advisory services. Within UK retail investment platforms, Hargreaves Lansdown competes as an execution-only and advised generalist rather than a niche or single-product broker: it covers the full account wrapper set (ISA, SIPP, general dealing, savings) under one login for a mass-market and mass-affluent private investor base, rather than specialising in a narrow segment such as spread betting, CFDs or robo-advice. It positions itself as the UK's largest platform for private investors by client numbers and assets held, competing with rivals including AJ Bell and Interactive Investor. The company was founded on 1 July 1981 by Peter Hargreaves and Stephen Lansdown, who started out advising clients on unit trusts and tax planning. It listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2007 and grew into one of the FTSE's larger financial services constituents before a consortium led by CVC Capital Partners, together with Nordic Capital and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, took the company private in a deal valuing it at £5.4bn (1,110 pence per share); the acquisition completed and the shares were delisted from the London Stock Exchange on 25 March 2025. As part of the deal, co-founder Peter Hargreaves sold roughly half of his prior stake for over £500m while rolling the remainder into the private company, retaining about a 14% shareholding and a board seat, which he took up in April 2025. Its regulated entity, Hargreaves Lansdown Asset Management Limited, is authorised and regulated by the UK Financial Conduct Authority. The group states it holds more than £172bn on behalf of over 2 million clients and employs more than 2,000 people from its Bristol headquarters. Matt Benchener, previously a managing director at Vanguard running its US retail direct business (Vanguard Personal Investor), was named incoming chief executive in January 2026, joining in March 2026 for a handover period alongside interim chief executive Richard Flint before assuming the CEO role in full in July 2026, when Flint moves to the board as deputy chair.
