SBI Securities is a Tokyo based online brokerage and a subsidiary of SBI Holdings, providing retail investors in Japan with trading access to domestic and foreign equities, mutual funds, bonds, foreign exchange, futures and options, and physical commodities such as gold, silver and platinum, alongside tax advantaged NISA and iDeCo retirement accounts and integrated banking through the SBI Group's online bank. Account opening, trading and portfolio management run through a single web platform and companion mobile apps that cover both Japanese and US stock trading. The firm competes chiefly against fellow Japanese online brokers Rakuten Securities, Matsui Securities and Monex on pricing, product breadth and execution technology. SBI eliminated commissions on domestic stock trading at the end of September 2023, ahead of the launch of Japan's expanded NISA program in January 2024, and it routes domestic equity orders through a smart order routing service that compares prices across the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the SBI Japannext proprietary trading system to select the best execution venue. In November 2025 it partnered with US broker infrastructure provider Alpaca to launch a dedicated US stock execution service, extending access for Japanese retail investors amid rising domestic demand for US equities. The business traces to a securities firm founded in 1988 that began internet trading in 1999 under the E*Trade Securities name and was renamed SBI Securities in 2008 after SBI Holdings took control. It is registered as a Financial Instruments Business Operator with Japan's Kanto Local Finance Bureau, registration No. 44, and is a member of the Japan Securities Dealers Association. By scale, the company reported around 13 million brokerage accounts and more than 338 billion dollars in client assets under custody as of late 2025, and SBI Holdings' securities segment posted nine month operating revenue of 178.4 billion yen for fiscal 2024, up 17.6 percent year on year, a record for the period. Between November 2022 and March 2024, SBI Securities migrated its core domestic stock trading system, including order processing, pricing and account infrastructure, from on premises servers to Amazon Web Services. The company undertook the move to handle transaction growth it anticipated from the fee elimination and the new NISA program, saying on premises hardware procurement had previously taken about a year to scale. The migrated platform now handles on the order of 100 million site visits and 3.6 million transactions a day, with daily transaction value exceeding 13 billion dollars.
