Wealthfront is a Palo Alto, California based automated investment manager and personal finance platform. Its core product is a robo-advisor that builds and rebalances globally diversified, ETF-based portfolios, paired with a self-directed stock investing account, a high-yield cash account with a linked debit card, 529 college savings accounts, IRAs, trust and joint accounts, and an automated bond ladder. In 2024 the company acquired the online mortgage platform Afford Lending and began rolling out a home lending product, first to clients in Colorado, extending its scope beyond investing into borrowing. Within the robo-advisor category, Wealthfront differentiates on tax efficiency and self-service automation rather than human advice: it emphasizes daily tax-loss harvesting and direct indexing (offered through products such as S&P 500 Direct and Nasdaq-100 Direct) to reduce a client's tax bill without requiring interaction with a human adviser. Its stated target customer is the self-directed, largely younger, tech-oriented investor who wants a low-touch, algorithm-driven experience rather than the hybrid human-plus-robo model some competitors use. The minimum investment for its automated account is 500 dollars, and its standard advisory fee is 0.25 percent of assets under management. The company operates as an SEC-registered investment adviser. Wealthfront was founded in 2008 by Andy Rachleff, a co-founder of venture firm Benchmark, and Dan Carroll, initially as a mutual fund analysis service called kaChing before pivoting to automated wealth management and rebranding as Wealthfront in 2011. Rachleff serves as chairman; David Fortunato, formerly the company's chief technology officer, became chief executive in 2021. In January 2022 UBS agreed to acquire Wealthfront for 1.4 billion dollars, but the two firms mutually terminated the deal in September 2022, citing regulatory concerns, with UBS instead taking a 69.7 million dollar convertible note in the company. As of its December 2025 IPO filings, Wealthfront reported roughly 95 billion dollars in platform assets and more than 1.4 million funded clients. Wealthfront went public on the Nasdaq Global Select Market on December 12, 2025 under the ticker WLTH, pricing its offering at 14.00 dollars per share and raising approximately 485 million dollars in gross proceeds; Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan led the underwriting syndicate. Shares rose modestly on debut, and multiple financial news outlets valued the company at roughly 2.7 billion dollars based on the first closing price. The listing capped a run of speculation about a Wealthfront IPO that dated back several years and followed the collapsed UBS acquisition.
