Robert R. Prechter Jr. is an American market analyst and author who founded Elliott Wave International (EWI) in 1979 after beginning his career as a technical analyst at Merrill Lynch in 1975. Through EWI's newsletters (led by the long-running "The Elliott Wave Theorist"), books, and educational video series, he has spent decades teaching the Elliott Wave Principle, a framework for forecasting financial markets from repeating crowd-psychology patterns in price charts, and built EWI into what the firm describes as the world's largest independent market-analysis publisher. Prechter, who has written around twenty books including the bestselling "Conquer the Crash," is credited with popularizing Elliott Wave analysis among a mainstream trading audience; he won the 1984 U.S. Trading Championship with a claimed 444% four-month return in a monitored options account and was named "Guru of the Decade" by the Financial News Network in 1989 for his 1980s market calls. He later developed "socionomics," a theory that social mood drives economic and political trends rather than the reverse.
