Thomas J. Dorsey (Tom Dorsey) is a U.S. technical analyst best known for popularizing Point and Figure charting, a time-independent method of tracking price movement using columns of X's and O's to signal supply/demand shifts and trend reversals. He began his career as a stockbroker at Merrill Lynch in 1974 and later co-founded Dorsey, Wright & Associates (DWA) in 1987, building it into one of the most widely followed technical research and asset-management firms built around Point and Figure analysis and relative-strength ranking systems; DWA was acquired by Nasdaq in 2015, becoming Nasdaq Dorsey Wright, where its "Point & Figure University" continues to teach the method to brokers and investors. He is the author of several books, including the widely used textbook "Point and Figure Charting: The Essential Application for Forecasting and Tracking Market Prices" (now in multiple editions) and "Tom Dorsey's Trading Tips," and has been a recurring guest on Fox Business programs discussing market analysis. He served as Chairman and CEO of DWA until his retirement in 2019 and has received recognition such as the Wharton School's Distinguished Speaker Award for his contributions to technical analysis education.
