The LSE Directory / Trading software
AmiBroker is a Windows desktop application for technical analysis, charting and systematic trading strategy development, built and sold by AmiBroker.com, a small software company based in Poland. The software combines real-time and end-of-day charting with a market scanning tool called Exploration, automated signal generation, and a backtesting and optimization engine capable of simulating strategies across a portfolio of instruments rather than one symbol at a time. Users write indicators, scans and trading systems in AmiBroker Formula Language (AFL), a proprietary, vectorized, C-like scripting language built into the product. The product targets retail and semi-professional systematic traders and quants who want to design and rigorously test rule-based strategies themselves rather than trade off a vendor's signals. Its main technical differentiators against other retail charting packages are AFL's speed (vectorized array processing rather than bar-by-bar loops), true portfolio-level backtesting with configurable position sizing, commissions and slippage, and built-in walk-forward and Monte Carlo analysis for testing strategy robustness. AmiBroker is sold as a perpetual license, not a subscription, in three editions, Standard, Professional and an Ultimate Pack that bundles the AmiQuote data downloader and an AFL Code Wizard, and it connects to market data and brokers through third-party plug-ins such as Interactive Brokers, IQFeed and Norgate Data rather than an in-house feed. The company was founded in 1995 by Tomasz Janeczko, who holds an M.Sc. (1994) and Ph.D. (1998) in computer science and telecommunications from Wroclaw University of Technology and has been AmiBroker's founder and chief software architect since inception; he has traded privately since 1993. The product began as shareware on the Amiga platform, added the AFL scripting language and its first Windows version in 1999, introduced true portfolio-level backtesting and optimization in 2003, and in 2006 the company states it was the first vendor to ship native 64-bit technical analysis software. Per its Wikidata entry the current stable release at the time of this research was version 6.93, dated August 2024. As of 2025 the company began rolling out AmiBroker 7, layering AI/LLM-assisted AFL code generation onto the existing charting and portfolio-backtesting engine, continuing what the company describes as a cadence of roughly 200 feature additions a year rather than moving to a subscription or cloud-hosted model.
